PHILOSOPHY

WESTGATE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

LINE ICON

Scripture teaches repeatedly that the aim of the Christian life, and thus the ultimate goal of Christian education, is to develop Christlikeness in the believer in thought, word, and deed (Rom. 8:29, 12:2; 2 Cor. 3:18; Col. 1:28b, 3:10; Phil. 3:21; 2 Pet. 1:4). Thus the process of Christian education seeks to help the student to learn of God (Matt. 11:29) and to develop godly wisdom (Prov. 4:5, 7) that manifests itself in a changed life (Jam. 3:13). True Christian education fosters in the student a genuine desire to apply and obey the truths of Scripture in order that God would receive the glory (Matt. 5:16; John 15:8; Rom. 15:6; 1 Cor. 10:31). This desire is brought about as the Christian begins to see things from God’s perspective and as he develops a reverential fear of the Lord (Psa. 111:10).

Scripture clearly assigns parents the ultimate responsibility for the education of their children (Gen. 18:19; Deut. 4:9-10, 6:7; Eph. 6:4; 2 Tim. 3:15). Westgate Christian School exists primarily to help parents fulfill their sacred responsibilities to provide for their children an academically sound, Christ-centered education based on the principles of the Word of God.

Since the ultimate objective of Christian education is the development of Christlike character in each young person, WCS seeks to make this goal apparent in everything we do. Certainly Bible instruction and chapel services are essential parts of the Christian school experience, but, taken alone, they are not sufficient to provide a truly Christian education. Every subject, every topic, and every activity at WCS are undertaken with God’s purposes in view. WCS seeks to challenge Christian young people to mature spiritually, to be loyal to God’s Word, and to be willing to do His will.

Westgate Christian School strives for academic excellence in order to prepare students for a life of service to God. We believe in traditional educational procedures and emphasize the basics in building an academic foundation. The academic curriculum focuses on preparing and enabling the student to communicate effectively with others, to work responsibly and productively in a technically-oriented society, to further his Christian and American heritage, and to apply biblical wisdom in daily life. Our students seek to understand not only the Bible, but also language, literature, mathematics, history, music, and the natural sciences. Students are challenged to work independently and to think for themselves as they build convictions that will stand under the pressures of our modern culture.

True education includes more than just academics. It encompasses physical, spiritual, and social development as well (Luke 2:52). Thus Westgate Christian School, along with the youth ministry of Westgate Baptist Church, seeks to provide social, athletic, recreational, and service opportunities for Christian young people in a structured, wholesome climate, conducive to spiritual growth. Such opportunities enable students to apply the spiritual truths taught in the home and the classroom in their day-to-day activities and in their relationships with others. Likewise, developing in each student an appreciation of the fine arts, wholesome desires and discretion in physical recreation, and an appreciation of our country and its freedoms are real goals of WCS.

In an age dominated by humanistic philosophies, WCS is an institution focused on Christ and guided by the Word of God. The philosophy of a school will ultimately determine its curriculum and procedures. We will strive to apply a genuinely biblical philosophy in every class and activity in order to help each student grow in his love for the Lord and in his desire to serve God wholeheartedly.
